Watchmen Will Not Be Coming Back For A Season 2 On HBO

USA TODAY-  "Watchmen" won a loyal following and critical acclaim, as the superhero comics series was adapted into a politically relevant drama about race and the criminal justice system. But don't look for a second season of the drama, which wrapped up its nine-episode run last month, largely because creator Damon Lindelof isn't interested in doing it.

HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told USA TODAY Wednesday that Lindelof, the co-creator of ABC's "Lost" who also created HBO's "The Leftovers,"  "brilliantly took this graphic novel and just kind of broke it open and created a whole new world," in which Regina King starred as a masked cop in Tulsa, in a 2019 when Robert Redford is president.

"It's really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do. If there's an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a 'Fargo,' 'True Detective' (anthology) take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether. We’re very proud of 'Watchmen,' but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do."

Lindelof told USA TODAY this week that he's told the story he wants to tell and has no interest in a second season, though he's "given my blessing" to HBO should it want to pursue a new installment with another writer-producer. But Bloys concedes that's unlikely to happen: "It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way.

So I guess we aren't going to see if Regina King can walk on water or is about to end up in her pool looking like a goddamn asshole. But you know what? I'm okay with it. Don't get me wrong, I loved everything about the Watchmen HBO show. It was one of my favorite seasons of TV I've seen in years and one of the very few shows that actually got better once you went down the Reddit rabbit holes of fan theories and Easter eggs.

But if Damon Lindelof doesn't want to do another season of Watchmen or have any more material for another season of Watchmen, I don't want to watch another season of Watchmen. I never watched Lost. But based on all the bitching and moaning I've heard about it over the years, it seems like shit hit the fan as the seasons progressed and it became clear there was no clear plan on how to land the franchise mapped out by Lindleof or the rest of the creative team.

If Lindleof is out, I'd rather just have HBO wrap things up after one awesome season that progressed the overall story of the Watchmen universe a shitload instead of handing it over to another person that could potentially give anything less than the A+ season we just witnessed. This way the franchise would be in a decent place if anyone ever picked it up again. And if they didn't, the entire story of Watchmen being told in one comic series, one movie, and one TV series with a cliffhanger ending is kinda cool. At least until someone buys the franchise, brings it to Broadway as a musical, and officially makes Alan Moore snap. But other than that, I'm happy any possibility of a Season 2 of Watchmen on TV starts and ends with Damon Lindleof.
