A Lawyer For Patrick Reed Sent Brandel Chamblee A Cease-And-Desist Letter Demanding That He Stop Calling Reed A Cheater
ESPN- An attorney for Patrick Reed sent a cease-and-desist letter to Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee demanding he stop referring to the golfer as a cheater for his actions at a tournament in the Bahamas last month. Golfweek obtained the letter in which attorney Peter Ginsberg wrote that the purpose “is to obtain assurance that you will refrain from any further dissemination, publication or republication of false and defamatory statements concerning Mr. Reed, including any allegations that he ‘cheated’ at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.” Chamblee has been a vocal critic of Reed in the aftermath of a rules violation during the third round of the tournament in which the golfer was assessed a two-shot penalty for improving his line of play when he took two practice strokes in a waste area. Among things he said on the air was that “to defend what Patrick Reed did is defending cheating. It’s defending breaking the rules.”
Chamblee acknowledged to ESPN that he had received the letter, which hints at legal action. “The letter accuses flippant and reckless comments,” Chamblee said. “My comments were weighed heavily before they came out of my mouth, and they were meant to address the larger issue of what I believe to be the decaying traditions of the game. This game has always had at its core the belief that self-governing gives the game its appeal. Inasmuch as we play the game for camaraderie. The self-governing tradition is slowly being replaced by a catch-me-if-you-can attitude.
Round and round we go! What a year it’s already been for Patrick Reed and it’s only January 10th! He is a controversy MACHINE. The guy can’t help but make headlines literally every where he goes. Let’s do a quick controversy recap before we dive into what’s going on between him and Brandel Chamblee.
First he made headlines at Tiger’s tournament in the Bahamas for what appears to be a pretty blatant attempt at cheating
Then at the Presidents Cup when his caddy got into a physical altercation with a fan
Then at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii when a fan yelled, “CHEATER!”
It’s been a nonstop stream of Patrick Reed headlines for the last couple weeks. Reed is obviously no stranger to controversy, and has been making headlines seemingly since he was born, but there seems to have been an uptick in Reed-centric headlines lately. One headline that flew under the radar (because it’s very VERY specific to me) is that “Patrick Reed” AKA Justine Reed followed me on Twitter at 1:21am Christmas morning
Perplexing to say the least.
And now we’ve got Patrick Reed’s lawyer sending cease-and-desist letters to Brandel Chamblee demanding that he stop calling Reed a cheater on Golf Channel. It’s an interesting scenario because for maybe the first time ever Reed has found himself up against a person who is just as hated as him. Chamblee is a fucking lightning rod in the world of golf because of his #takes and people despise him for it so it’ll be interesting to see who golf fans decide to side with. You wanna know who I think wins this match up of the Most Hated Men In Golf? We do. All of us. Anyone and everyone who follows the game of golf wins. What a hilarious situation we’ve found ourselves in with Brandel Chamblee and Patrick Reed.
And yeah it’s super petty for Patrick Reed to sick his lawyers on Brandel who’s just doing his job but I’ll be damned if it’s not entertaining as hell. We’ve long said on Fore Play that golf needs a villain and bah gawd did we get one in Patrick Reed. Not only did we get one but we got a GREAT one. He’s the best kind of villain because he kinda sorta doesn’t care about being the villain and that pisses people off even more. At the end of the day, Brandel is still gonna give his takes on Golf Channel and Patrick Reed is gonna keep doing Patrick Reed things but it’s been an interesting saga regardless.
