Today In 'Bad Ideas': Plane Tries To Land On Snow And Ice Covered Runway At O'Hare This Morning

(SOURCE)

An American Airlines flight from North Carolina slid off a runway at O’Hare International Airport on Monday morning, after its landing gear snapped, tipping the jet onto its wing, as blowing snow was falling in the Chicago area.

Video posted on social media shows the twin-engine Embraer 145 landing on Runway 10L and sliding sideways, stopping with its wing in the grassy area next to the runway. Passengers are heard gasping sighs of relief.

“I think we landed!” one passenger is heard saying.

Curet said passengers could feel the pilot zig-zagging the plane on the runway to get it to stop, before the landing gear snapped.

“Then the plane actually went sideways, and then the wing – the actual right wing – stopped the plane from capsizing once we got off the runway,” he said.

Well that’s fucked up.  If I were on that plane I’d be freaking the FUCK out the moment I could see the runway.  Kinda reminds me of the first time I flew into Laguardia years ago.  Almost had a heart attack thinking we were about to land in the water for a split second.

Thank god nobody was hurt, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a fuselage full of human excrement at the same time.  WTF were air control and the pilots thinking?  I was sliding all over the road today on the way to the office in my 2016 Nissan Altima.  Wasn’t too safe.  Could hardly fire off a text while driving today (I persevered though, no worries).  So why are these pilots trying to land on a snow and ice covered runway?

It’s also another reason to fly to and from Midway anytime you have the choice.  Sometimes you’re flying out of O’Hare to go and torture Yankees fans on a live stream and your flight is the only one that gets delayed that day.  Other times you’re landing on a snow covered runway and your plane winds up in a field lying sideways on its wing.  This kinda shit would never happen at Midway.  Not ever.  GOAT regional airport and that is a fact.
