A Youth Football Coach Is Facing A Two-Game Suspension And A $500 Fine For Winning A Game 36-0

NBC New York - A local youth football coach faces a possible suspension and fine after his team blew out an opponent, violating a league rule in the process. Kyle Williams told NBC10 he knew he was dangerously close to breaking the rules Saturday morning when his youth football team, the Conshohocken Golden Bears, went up 30 to 0. The rules of the Keystone Sports League, which features kids no older than 7 years of age, prevent a team from going up by more than 30 points.

When one of the second stringers, a 5-year-old boy, got the ball he ran toward the end zone as Williams ran along the sideline and repeatedly yelled for him to fall down. The boy still scored however, putting the team up 36 to 0.

Now Williams is facing a possible $500 fine and a 2-game suspension.

That should be the only quote this coach gives when speaking to the media. I don't want any apologies. I don't want any excuses about his 2nd team running back finally getting a chance to score. I want this 7-year-old ball coach to go Vince Lombardi on everyone and remind them that if winning isn't everything, then why do we keep score?

But alas, as we all know, that's not the way this world works anymore. And it's gotten so old that it's really not even news anymore. So I'm not going to make this blog about the softness of America and the inevitable participation trophy that this 7 year football team will get at the end of the year even though they can't stop a nosebleed. It's already been discussed ad nauseam. Besides, I'll just let former NFL wide receiver Torrey Smith, who's wife grew up in this town, give his two cents on the situation:

Well said, Torrey. This league stinks. To fine a volunteer coach $500 is so morally wrong that it should be criminally wrong. This dude makes $0 a year to coach a bunch of 7-year-olds each night. He probably hears parents complaints about everything from who should play quarterback to the fact that the team isn't providing a gluten free option for the post game snack. And you're going going to suspend him from doing so??? There's not many people on this planet that would do that job for money, and now you're going to tell him he can't do it AND he owes YOU money?

Anyways, as ridiculous as this decision by the league is, I do have one bone to pick with this coach. How do you win 36-0? Winning 36-0 is not worth the $500 fine and two-game suspension. The way I look at it, you have one of two options. You can either:

A.) Make sure you stay under the 30 point rule, meaning you gotta run out there and tackle your own player before he gets to the endzone. You can't spend all game trying to stay under 30 just to have some 7-year-old backup empty out your checking account with less than a minute left.

OR

B.) Win 140-0. Lay it on these dweebs. If it's $500 and two games whether you win by 31 or 310, you light up that scoreboard until it shows triple digits. Trick plays. Never punt. Put up as many points as you can. And then after the game, you pull out your finest Woody Hayes quote:

"Coach, why did you go for 2 when you were up 50-14 on Michigan late in the 4th quarter?"
