The Tom Holland 'Uncharted' Movie Has It's Director

AARP's 16th Annual Movies For Grownups Awards - Arrivals

(Deadline) “Sony Pictures is negotiating with Travis Knight to direct Uncharted, the Sony Pictures film adaptation of the massive selling PlayStation game. Tom Holland remains attached to star and has been squarely in the mix in the discussions for Knight to come aboard after Dan Trachtenberg exited. The film will begin production early next year.

Knight directed the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, and Kubo and The Two Strings. He cut his teeth as lead animator for stop-motion animation studio Laika, on films that have included Coraline, The Boxtrolls and ParaNorman. Bumblebee was his live action directing debut.”

For those of you that haven’t played the Uncharted video games before, they’re blast. Nathan Drake is one of the coolest adventurers ever (and has one of the best adventurer names ever), and he’s basically an Indiana Jones-type protagonists. He gets his ass-beat, he falls, stumbles, messes up etc. It’s great, he’s just like us! People have clamored for this franchise to get a movie for a while, and the frontrunner to lead has usually been the caked up king Nathan Fillion because he looks more or less exactly like him.  They actually even created a fan-made movie for it.

This movie is going to focus more on the younger journey of Drake, so Fillion doesn’t really fit the casting bill. Tom Holland rules and I think he will make a great rendition of the character, and Travis Knight should be a solid director as well. ‘Bumblebee’ was flawed but did really well with the coming-of-age element which should apply here. ‘Kubo and the two strings’ was AWESOME, but also stop-motion animated. The way he was able to tell the story was great and should apply cross-style, though. The screenwriting crew of Art Marcum/Matt Holloway (Iron Man) and Rafe Judkins (the future ‘Uncharted’ movie) is also awesome, so hopefully they can break the trend of video game movies all being terrible.
