Martha Stewart's Crazy Sleeping Habits and Kevin Bacon's Fiasco with People Magazine

In case you haven’t heard, Season 2 of “The Corp” dropped its first two episodes today. You’ll get brand new podcasts each Tuesday over the next month and a half with hosts Big Cat, Alex Rodriguez, and even Barstool CEO Erika Nardini in certain episodes. Today’s guests included Martha Stewart and Kevin Bacon. Let’s start things off with a tidbit from Stewart’s episode, where she confirmed that she is used to getting just FOUR hours of sleep per night.

Big Cat: I read that you sleep four hours a night. Is that still the truth?

Martha Stewart: Yeah and it depends if I had coffee, I won’t sleep even that.

Big Cat: And you sleep the lights on?

Martha Stewart: Last night, I had the lights on, and you know, I have cats and if I keep the light on, they’re a little bit more quiet because they think its day time.

Big Cat: Ok, I read that the light was on because when you wake up you want to be ready to go instantly.

Martha Stewart: Oh yeah, I am ready to go instantly. I also have a horrible habit of sleeping with my iPad. Instead of with a man right now, I’m sleeping with an iPad. It’s not the best thing, but it’s actually an alright substitution sometimes. I can do the crossword puzzle, which I have to do, I’m addicted to the crossword puzzle. Then I have to also watch the latest movie, and then I have to read the New York Times from cover to cover. The whole thing. I'm well-informed.

Big Cat: And the iPad never steals the sheets. So, you're fine.

This just takes the saying “the early bird gets the worm” to a whole new level. But this isn’t the first time we’ve heard a big name have an unusual sleep schedule. Former Pardon My Take guest Mark Wahlberg is known for his early wake-up calls and workouts and The Rock has said he aims for a sleeping window of 3-5 hours. Clearly, this has worked for them, and I’m not saying they should change things up. It’s just wild to think about. Anything less than eight hours seems like a major L for most people. Damn it, even more than eight hours can keep you feeling tired. Not sure how this crew does it, but good for them. Maybe I’ll give it a try! (Narrator: “He didn’t give it a try”)

Now, let’s shift over to superstar actor Kevin Bacon. In the earlier stages of his career, he tells a story of grinding his way in the acting business since the age of 13, trying to work his way up, to get into a movie essentially as big as Footloose came to be. But then he realized the certain spotlight from that film isn’t exactly what he wanted.

Kevin Bacon: “And I pushed back so hard that I think even when you look at like some of the decisions that I made after that, I just sort of was pushing back against it whether I was aware of it or not. I mean I'll give you a silly example, you know. They came to me with the cover of People Magazine, and People Magazine was a big fucking deal back then, to get the cover of People Magazine. And I'm sure you've [A-Rod] been on the cover about a thousand times, but maybe not by choice.

And you know I was like OK, I'll do the cover of People Magazine but I'm not dancing because that's what everybody wanted me to do at the time. They were like ‘We got to dance we want to see you dance you, can you dance? Can you do the dance?’ To this day, they do it. You know, at weddings and stuff, you know, I can't get away from it. So, I get to this thing I said I'll do the photo shoot. And I'm not dancing. And I get there. The photographers got a trampoline. All right. And he's like you don't have to dance. We're just going to have you leaping and jumping you're just going to hop in. And I said, no I’m not. So, it was this battle with the photographer, and he got really pissed at me.

When you see the cover, what they did, almost as a fuck you, was they took my dance double, and had him get on the trampoline. So, I'm sitting on the ground and he's up in the air like flying all around me. And they say you know something like, ‘You know Kevin Bacon stars in the movie, but his dance double does all the fancy work.’ They kind of fucked me. And that was a perfect example of like what I was kind of going through and my kind of conflicted feelings about celebrity and about stardom. Of course, now I’d kill to get on the cover.”

Props to him here. Now I know people could take it a different way and give him shit for not doing the dance for this photo shoot and moving on with his life, but at least he was there in the first place. The fact that the magazine tried to flip the narrative about doing the “fancy footwork” when it comes to his dancing double as well is fishy at best. Luckily, this little sequence of tension didn’t seem to have too big of a lasting impact on either party. Kevin Bacon continues to have a stellar acting career, and People Magazine always seems to be available when you’re checking out at the grocery store.
