Amherst Restaurants Are Now BYOB, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Source -  For the first time, Amherst has regulations in place explicitly allowing restaurants that don’t serve alcohol to give patrons the option of bringing their own wine or beer to drink while dining.

The Board of License Commissioners unanimously adopted “bring your own bottle” or BYOB regulations Monday. The regulations let restaurants that have common victuallers licenses, aka food permits, but lack liquor licenses to give their customers the opportunity to drink their own alcoholic beverages.

Steven McCarthy, the licensing coordinator for the town, said the regulations, approved by a 4-0 vote, go into effect immediately. The measure provides for civil fines between $100 and $300 for violations, though the fines would first have to be adopted by the Town Council.

FINALLY, some common sense laws from a town that has a history of passing none. Will bringing your own booze into a restaurant make a difference in the lives of any of the people who live in there? Of course not. Students at UMass go to house parties, not restaurants (at least that was the case when I was there), but it’s still nice to know you have the option. Here’s a video of a house party I was at on College Street in 2009 that has nothing to do with anything. It was a big deal because someone ‘uploaded it to YouTube.’ Skip to 00:55 if you’re impatient. Sorry for the grainy video- it was shot on a Razr.

The point it, I like to think that stuff like that still goes on which is why the law is irrelevant. I don’t even know why they did it in the first place considering how destroyed everyone at UMass is all the time.

FOR EXAMPLE:

You get the idea. All those people now have the ability to bring alcohol into establishments without having to hide it in a water bottle. I never thought I’d say it, but Amherst is finally leaning into its party culture. Cheers to that. Can’t wait to see where we land on next years list of Top Party Schools.
