How hype do you think this dude was for that ball to get stuck like that? Unless you’re a massive douche, life really doesn’t present you with too many opportunities to show off your climbing skills like that in public. Think about it. How many situations have you come across in the past….5 years or so that you needed to scale something in a public setting? I honestly can’t think of a single one. Which–for somebody like me who doesn’t have that skillset to begin with–isn’t much of an issue because I’d much rather not have to embarrass myself. But for somebody like this ref who clearly has those skills at his disposal? Well it has to be infuriating that he can climb like that but never gets a chance to show it off to the world.
So just like Herb Brooks once famously said, great moments are born from great opportunities. This ref had a once in a lifetime opportunity to show off his climbing skills without coming across like a super braggy douchebag about it. He saw his opportunity and he seized the shit out of it. And on top of it all, he got to be the hero who saved the day because from looking around that gym, I feel like that was probably the only ball there that day. No ball, no game. So sure, this is just another example of a ref making things all about himself. But at least he’s actively trying to save the game instead of ruining it like the rest of them do.
