Julian Edelman Had a Day for Himself on His Media Tour Yesterday

So all day yesterday and into the night Julian Edelman went through the media car wash to promote his new Showtime documentary, “100% Julian Edelman.” The most significant of which obviously was joining Pardon My Take where he had this to say about the status of Josh Gordon:

“I don’t know anything. Like, legit. Like I’ve asked 30 people inside the organization and outside of it like, ‘Do you know what’s going to happen?’ And no one knows. Not one thing. So we’re just kind of sitting and waiting to see what the circumstances are going to be with him, because he’d be a really good tool to have. He balls.”

Which is just surreal. Sometime in December Gordon himself announced he was stepping away from the game to deal with mental health issues. Then we got reports that he was allowed to say he’s stepping away one step ahead of the NFL’s Piss Patrol dragging him away for a positive test. We’re now practically to the 4th of July and not one person inside or out of the Patriots organization has the first clue what Gordon’s status is. Not even the guy expected to stand on the line of scrimmage alongside him and run routes underneath his. There are totalitarian regimes around the globe who would empty their treasuries to be able to maintain the level of secrecy Ginger Satan runs his dictatorship with.

Beyond that, Edelman’s biggest appearance was probably being on with Stephen Colbert.

Frankly I thought it was good, not great. An 80% rating on Jerry Tomatoes. Less because Edelman wasn’t on his game, but because Colbert kind of struggled as the straight man. I know enough about the man to understand his background is Shakespeare, poetry, politics and the character he played on “The Colbert Report.” And it would appear that exchanging witty banter with the Super Bowl MVP and one of the biggest personalities in pro football is not exactly his wheelhouse. For instance, completely stepping on one of the most repeated punchlines in the history of the Patriots Dynasty, a guaranteed laugh line every time it’s used, and making it so Edelman had to repeat it:

And for the record, I despise stealing another comic’s bit as much as anyone. And if the guy sponging off Brady was some notorious joke thief like Carlos Mencia or Robin Williams (RIP), I’d be all over him like a spider monkey. But I’m sure in this case, Brady doesn’t mind Edelman borrowing it.

Though I’ll have to say the rest of it, the non-comedy sincere parts about Edelman discovering his Jewish faith, was actually pretty moving. Plus talking about watching Brady since he was in 8th grade and always feeling a connection to him because they were both underdogs kind of got to me. And there’s not a man, woman or child in New England who doesn’t reach for the Kleenex to clean up some sorts of bodily fluids every time they see the clip Colbert showed:

So all in all it was a great chance to celebrate the guy whose year started out with a suspension, ended with him cementing his status as the best receiver over a full career in Pats history and continued with him becoming a media superstar in the offseason. Not bad for a 7th round quarterback out of Kent State.
