All good things must come to an end, and on the final day of the 1998 season, that is what happened to Cal Ripken Jr's consecutive game streak. It was the final home game of the season for the Birds, and Ripken decided that September 20th, 1998 was the day. The streak started on May 30th, 1982 and stretched all the way to 2,632 games. Guy didn't miss a day of work for 17 years. Broken nose, hyper extended knee from a bench clearing brawl, kicking Kevin Costner's ass, nothing could keep Cal off the field. Obviously he was going to make the call himself to end the streak, but you've got to respect how he handled it. Just told Ray Miller, "hey, I'm out today." They sent out Ryan Minor who thought he was being pranked, I mean there was no way Cal would just pull himself out of the game, would he? The clip shows a neat scene with the Yankees coming out of the dugout to applaud Cal and the streak, and same with the fans. I have bits and pieces of memories of this day, but man I wish I was old enough to recall the whole thing. This would have been another great twitter day. Beat reporters would have been tweeting cryptic things earlier in the day when they heard the news and everyone would be freaking out. Nonetheless, Cal went out on his terms, not with a body part in a cast or hobbling away. Just thought it was the right time. That is why he's the best. Enjoy your weekend, friends.
