Poll Shows That 56% Of Americans, In Real Life, Want To Ban "Arabic Math" From Public Schools
Well, this is one of those instances where a good joke becomes too real and then utterly embarassing. VEEP having their resident moron character drum up support by attacking “muslim math” obviously led directly to this poll being taken.
(The Guardian)–More than half of Americans believe “Arabic numerals” – the standard symbols used across much of the world to denote numbers – should not be taught in school, according to a survey.
Fifty-six per cent of people say the numerals should not be part of the curriculum for US pupils, according to research designed to explore the bias and prejudice of poll respondents.
The digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are referred to as Arabic numerals. The system was first developed by Indian mathematicians before spreading through the Arab world to Europe and becoming popularised around the globe.
A poll perfectly crafted here. A question that gives Americans the opportunity to not only be dumb, but also racist. That’s the sweet spot when you’re trying to grab headlines. When given that opportunity, most Americans rejected the numbers they use every single day for the one they use once a year
So maybe Americans have it right. Maybe we should start teaching Roman Numerals just so we can understand what year we are on for our single greatest American event. I have no clue what Super Bowl we just played was. 48? 51? 57? Who fucking knows because the NFL basically uses what seems like a random set of X’s, L’s, V’s, and I’s then expects us to be able to figure it out. If the NFL is going to insist of using hieroglyphics in their Super Bowl logos then schools should start teaching it in schools. Otherwise the NFL is going to need to start using the Arab math for Super Bowls and the NFL would never let that happen. If they do that then that same 56% will think that Kaepernick won.
