Not A Big Deal Or Anything But USA Cricket Is On Their Way To Qualifying For The 2023 World Cup. Chirp Chirp
BBC - The United States cricket team earned one-day international status for the first time in their 54-year history after ensuring a top-four finish in the International Cricket Council’s World Cricket League Division 2.
The USA beat Hong Kong – qualifiers for the last two World T20 competitions – by 84 runs in Windhoek, Namibia.
Xavier Marshall, who played seven Tests for West Indies before switching allegiance, hit a century for USA, who become one of 20 nations to hold ODI status.
The USA’s only previous experience of playing top-level international cricket came in the 2004 Champions Trophy, but they are now able to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India.
The NFL Draft? Wrong. The NBA Playoffs? Wrong. The Stanley Cup Playoffs? Wrong.
If you were wondering what the most important sporting even taking place this week was, it’s that the United States cricket team have earned their ODI status. And if you’re wondering what “ODI status” means, well so was I earlier this morning. But ODI means “One-Day International”, which is the version of cricket that doesn’t take an entire goddamn week to finish a game. These games usually last about as long as your typical professional sporting event, maybe closer to a baseball game that goes into a couple extra innings. And with the USA cricket team earning their ODI status, that means that they can qualify for the World Cup in 2023.
Now if you’re saying to yourself, “Jordie, nobody gives a fuck about cricket” well then I am here to tell you couldn’t possibly be more wrong if you even tried. There are about 2.5 BILLION cricket fans in the world. Granted, most of them aren’t in America. But let’s say there are about 400 million football fans in the world and that’s including international fans as well. That means that there are at least 5-6 times more cricket fans in the world than there are fans of the NFL. More than a quarter of the world’s population are cricket fans, and now Team USA has a chance to take that shit over.
I wrote a blog at the beginning of the month titled, “I Just Really Wish I Understood Cricket“. Well it looks like I now have 4 years to figure that shit out before the 2023 World Cup. I’ll probably end up getting fired or something by 2023 so who knows if we’ll be blogging the 2023 World Cup or not. But I’ll still be accepting some applications to be my personal cricket tutor. Last thing I’d ever want to do is be one of those assholes in 2023 who are cheering on Team USA but have absolutely no idea what I’m cheering for/about.
