Josh Gordon Thanks the Patriots for Locking Him in For Next Year and Brady Approves
So in the midst of all the incredible free agency turmoil that makes this the best time of the NFL offseason (MLB, take note), the Patriots make a shrewd move by taking the devalued asset that is Josh Gordon and using the technicality that he was a high draft pick to make it so that he either
A) Stays in New England for $2 million or
B) Gets signed elsewhere but they get a 2nd rounder in return for him.
In other words they either win or they win.
And for his part, while admittedly Gordon is obviously dealing with a lot right now and isn’t in the most leveraged position ever for making deals, took the news that he isn’t free to shop himself and can’t possibly make more than Ryan Allen by going onto Instagram to celebrate and thank the team that just took away his ability to negotiate:
But here’s where it turns into the most Patriots moment of the 2019 offseason so far. At a time of year that is all about every NFLPA man for himself, Gordon’s post got totally fanboyed by one supporter in particular:
This fucking guy. Get a load of Tom Brady still on the wings of love for the wide receiver he barely had ever met when he was picked up in midseason. His wide receiver who needed a couple of weeks to get up to speed on the system Brady mastered when Gordon was in elementary school. His wide receiver who couldn’t stay off the Kush (or whatever) long enough to play deep into December, never mind the playoffs. But who balled out for 11 weeks and 40 catches before his demons got the best of him and that’s enough to earn the permanent support of the GOAT.
This is what people with the misfortune to not follow this team don’t get. This is the culture here. Can you imagine in your wildest fever dream say, Odell Beckham Jr. having this much of an emotional attachment to his team? Or Aaron Rodgers going out of his way to support a guy who’d only been his teammate less than three months before letting the team down? Ben Roethlisberger spent the better part of 2018 beefing with the most talented receiver in the league and now his team is imploding like a collapsing star. But Gordon and Brady are already working on their chemistry for next year so they can both be on the field together when Brady wins Ring No. 7.
Which reminds me, is anyone still talking about how players have to call Brady “Sir” and how upset he is about never winning that Patriot of the Week award that never existed? Or was that just a 2018 thing?
