The Coliseum Is A Great Venue to Watch Hockey. Bad Venue to Be A Human
So as everybody knows I went to the Coliseum last night for the first time with Frankie. Now if you listened to Frankie talk about this place for the past two years you’d think I was stepping into the Vatican. That’s how much reverence he has for the place.
Well after being there, there is no doubt it is a great venue for hockey. It’s old. It feels old. There are no bad seats. Everybody is on top of each other. It reminded me of the Old Garden minus the obstructed view. If you are sitting in your seat there is no other place you’d want to watch hockey. And the crowd was electric the entire game. Chanting and screaming from start to finish. It lived up to all Frankie’s hype and then some.
However it’s also pretty clear why they moved to Brooklyn. It’s pretty clear why they are only playing the first round of the playoffs at the Coliseum. Everything outside of watching the game sucks. It’s an old building and it feels old. You can’t go to the bathroom without being gone for 30 minutes. Food lines suck. Not to mention I went into the suite area to take a piss and even the suite areas suck. (Side note walked into Lou Amerillos suite by accident and promptly got kicked out). It’s like legit single file in the hallways. Like people always want to blame owners about being greedy but you can’t blame them here.
So as a fan I get why’d you never want the Coliseum to change. It’s literally a relic from the past and an unreal experience and atmosphere but at some point reality has to set in. Something has to give. It’s actually amazing a pro sports team still plays in a barn like that to begin with. Now I know why Frankie can’t miss another game. It’s like a retirement tour for an old barn.
