If The Suns Really Want To Turn Things Around, Maybe Free Beer Is The Answer
So the Suns found themselves in a pickle the other day. Not because their franchise stinks and the NBA is mad at them, but because not only are they losing on the court, they had themselves a little PR issue. You see Josh Jackson was slated to make an appearance at a local Fry’s which for those who don’t know is a grocery store. It was your normal autograph session where they were also giving away tickets if you bought some Dos Equis something I’m sure happens all the time. The only problem is, Josh Jackson didn’t show up. He wasn’t late, he didn’t even attend. Instead, it looks like he was at a restaurant that reportedly was only 10 miles away
Not the best look and a move that ended up costing him a cool 20K in fines. Now things are such a disaster for this Suns team it’s not all that surprising that they can’t even execute a simple promotional event, but you have to give credit to their GM James Jones who came to the rescue
You know how you immediately change the narrative and calm down an angry mob of Suns fan(s)? You give them free beer. Not only did Jones promise free tickets and a mailed autograph to anyone who wanted it, he also bought everyone who was of age a free 12 pack. Listen Josh Jackson is a fine young player with a ton of promise, but I’m thinking it’s a much better deal to walk away with free beer than to stand in line for a quick signature. Even if you wanted to be mad how could you when you’re being gifted free beer?
Which is why if the Suns really want to turn things around with their fans, and their product on the court isn’t going to get it done, why not adopt this method and bring it into the arena? Why not offer free beer during games as some sort of promotional event? Like if the Suns win a first quarter everyone gets a free beer or something like that. Or if the Suns win then you bring your ticket stub and get a free beer at your next game. Sort of like some teams do with frosties or whatever when someone misses two consecutive free throws. You want to get people to come to your games? The tickets to the Suns are cheap enough and I can’t imagine anyone would turn down the chance to get some free beer. Never, ever, underestimate the power of a free beer. I’m sure there are probably some lame rule that prevents them from doing something like this, not to mention the money they would for sure lose but who gives a shit about Robert Sarver’s pockets. This would be a great idea that they should seriously explore.
Maybe this is what the NBA doesn’t get. The Suns may be really bad in every other traditional sense of building a franchise and a successful team, but maybe that’s because they’re already 1 step ahead. Maybe they know that they first have to win over the fans, and since the players are clearly not going to be able to do that, the front office is realizing they can do it through beer. For all his shortcomings as a GM, James Jones may be onto something here.
