Internet 101: Man Goes Viral For Buying 120 Boxes Of Girl Scout Cookies So Girls Can Escape The Cold, Gets Arrested Days Later

j

ABC- A South Carolina man whose act of kindness toward some local Girl Scouts made him a viral hero has just as quickly fallen from grace after his arrest on drug trafficking charges. The photo of the man buying $540 worth of cookies so the girls could get out of the cold was shared thousands of times.

The man first bought seven boxes of cookies from the girls outside a store near Greenville, S.C., then came by again and bought the rest so they wouldn’t have to stand outside shivering. He posed for pictures with the girls but no one got his name. But authorities knew who he was.

The man, now identified as Detric Lee McGowan – known as “Fat” – was arrested by federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents on Tuesday, according to South Carolina station WSPA. Authorities accuse him of multiple drug trafficking charges, saying he and nine others named in a 22-count federal indictment were involved in smuggling heroin, cocaine and fentanyl to the United States from Mexico. He’s also accused with three others of trying to smuggle more than $1 million cash out of the country.

The winner…and STILL CHAMPION OF THE WORRRRRLD: THE INTERNET!!! As we have seen roughly a kabillion times, if you do a good deed or step anywhere near a camera and create a moment that has the potential to go viral, you better have no skeletons in your closet or they better be the most harmless skeletons in the world. Because the internet sleuths will find any crimes, racist posts, or tomfoolery from your past that will turn the tide of goodwill on you in an instant. And if you are dropping half a c-note on Girl Scout Cookies and posing for a picture with the two girls you just helped out, your money better have come from a legitimate place because if not, that is light work for the internet detectives who make sure no good deed goes unpunished.

That being said, I won’t feel too bad for Detric Lee McGowan. For one, it’s not like he was selling weed to some college kids and members of the #MHOC. Dude was allegedly helping move some seriously hard shit into and around a country in the midst of an opioid epidemic. But almost just as importantly, Detric Lee also flew too close to the sun. I can’t even imagine having the disposable income to be able to buy $540 worth of Girl Scout Cookies straight cash homie let alone the feeling of getting all those boxes. Samoas for days and Thin Mints for weeks. In fact, I guarantee Detric didn’t even get the individual colored boxes of cookies. He just got unopened brown box upon unopened brown box packed with the most addictive substances this side of Detric’s alleged day job. Bricks of cookies uncut to the gut that also came with a side of good karma that was immediately overwhelmed by the autocorrect of the internet justice system. Being able to flaunt more than 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies is a fat man’s dream, which Detric “Fat” McGowan got to live in real life before the internet served his ass like it did Ken Bone, that random dude from the Oscars, and countless other people.

On the bright side, at least a bunch of South Carolina cops have enough Girl Scout Cookies to last them a month (Okay, prolly a week. Even less if I was a cop there) and the judge in charge of the case may go lenient on a guy that got some kids out of the cold in exchange for a shitload of cookies.

Also this tweet cracked me up.
