I feel bad for kids who don't realize how damn good Kirby Puckett was, because that man was a stud. This clip only shows half the reason the Twins won game 6 of the 1991 World Series against Atlanta. Puckett made an incredible leaping catch against the plexiglass wall in right center earlier in the game that for sure would have scored a run for the Braves. Puckett could really do it all.
The home run he hit in the bottom of the 11th set up one of the greatest baseball games ever, and one of the best Game 7s in World Series history. The Twins would go on to win 1-0 on the arm of Jack Morris who threw 10 scoreless innings to lock up their second World Series title in five years. Puckett launched that homer deep into the white towel waving crowd in the MetroDome and Jack Buck played it perfectly with his trademark call. Can we talk about how weird it was that the Twins had that plexiglass wall above the fence? Really strange.
On the field, Puckett was a first ballot Hall Of Famer. He's arguably the greatest Twin of all time and he could have much better career numbers if his career wasn't cut short because of an eye condition. Off the field he seemed to be a bit of a scumbag, but I'm not here to belittle a man who isn't with us. It's hard to believe that he died in 2006, it seems like a lot more recent, but a sad death nonetheless. Puckett has to go down as one of the more underrated players of his era, because everyone talks about Griffey, McGwire, Sosa, and guys like that. Regardless of all that, this play will go down in history for the Twins and as one of the most memorable we've seen.
