Justin Herbert to Return to Oregon For His Senior Season
Pretty interesting news out of Oregon just five days before the Ducks take on Michigan State in the Redbox Bowl. How do you turn down somewhere around $30 million to go back to SCHOOL?? Call me crazy, but I’d have quit going to school for just $1 million.
Herbert was probably going to be the 1st quarterback taken in the 2019 NFL Draft, which means he was in consideration to be the #1 overall pick, seeing as how highly quarterbacks are valued. Mel Kiper Jr. had him as the #1 QB and #6 overall prospect, but now he’s heading back to hit the books for another year. While this is an extra Christmas present for Oregon fans, New York Giants fans have to be at least a little sour. Herbert is a 6’6″ 233 pounder with both a cannon and a great set of legs. He would’ve looked real good at the combine, and he probably would’ve looked even better lined up with OBJ and Saquan next year. Now who do the G-Men and other teams around the league look at next? Dwayne Haskins from Ohio State is the clear cut next in line.
No chance he stays too, right? He’ll probably be the 1st quarterback drafted now that Herbert isn’t involved, so can you really turn down that type of money to go back to school? Well, I guess Herbert just did it. But aside from Haskins, the 2019 QB class is very, very thin. Franchises in need of a quarterback cannot be happy with this selection.
Will Grier (WVU), Daniel Jones (Duke), and Drew Lock (Missouri) really don’t sound like the Baker Mayfield, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and Sam Darnold type prospects that have recently come into the league. But just because the best prospects aren’t there doesn’t mean that teams won’t reach to try and find their guy. The Giants will probably draft a QB. The Dolphins, Bucs, Broncos, Jaguars, and Raiders all have serious discussions to be had, too. It’s too bad that this wasn’t 2020, because that draft class, with the addition of Justin Herbert, has the potential to be LOADED.
Maybe those teams will go best available this year and hold out for one of these franchise guys in 2020? Not sure if the Giants can convince their fan base that another year of Eli is the answer. Or Jameis in Tampa. Or Derek Carr in Oakland. We’ll see how it shakes out. Those are the tough decisions that their front offices need to make. I know one front office that won’t be having that discussion though. We have our guy. Sorry losers!
