GQ Named Serena Williams "Woman" Of The Year, In Quotes, As A Nod To Designer Virgil Abloh's Partnership With Serena; Controversy Ensues

Ok kids, here’s the scoop! Virgil Abloh is the founder of Off White, a luxury streetwear brand. Off White is known for featuring these weird messages in quotation marks, an effect that is meant to symbolize ironic detachment or something. Some people think it’s cool, I think it’s a totally absurd reason to use quotes, but nobody has ever asked for my opinion on fashion. He is one of the hottest designers in the game right now, as Louis Vuitton made him artistic director of their menswear this year. In addition, Abloh collaborated with Serena Williams and designed some of the best sneakers of the year for her. As you can see, the sneakers feature the very quotation marks I mentioned a second ago.

GQ is a fashion magazine. They often write about collaborations between super famous athletes and fashion designers, much like the one I described above. If you’re not connecting the dots at this point, you should be prohibited from the internet.

And yet… and yet so many people can’t figure it out. I understand that many people aren’t familiar with Virgil Abloh or the quote thing. But once it’s explained to you, you should simply say “thank you! I learned something new today.” Right?

BECAUSE HE PARTNERED WITH SERENA! IF HE HAD DESIGNED FOR JONAH HILL, HENRY GOLDING, OR MICHAEL B JORDAN, I’M SURE “MEN” WOULD HAVE BEEN IN QUOTES! FUCK!!!! YOUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!

From the fog of internet war, a hero emerged…

@diamondswan_kai I could kiss you. I wouldn’t though, unless I had your explicit permission. That’s how you make stupid people on the internet look stupid! You write an analogy so long that you have to write it in notes and screen shot it into a tweet. See if you can invoke racism to really point out the absurdity. And use a foreign language to make it a universal lesson about respecting the cultures of others. Hey Dingo Dame, you dead mon?!

*Sniff* I just wish we could enjoy Serena’s accomplishments instead of diverting focus to misplaced social activism.
