Frankie Fins Week 8 Recap: Thursday Night Toast
A week ago, after an embarrassing Thursday Night performance, the Arizona Cardinals fired Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy, following this week’s debacle Matt Burke, the Defensive Coordinator of the Miami Dolphins should be next. In a word, the Dolphins secondary was flat out embarrassing as Deshaun Watson picked it apart and made it look easy. This just four days after they turned Kerryon Johnson into a star and allowed the Lions 248 yards on the ground. Injuries have been a big factor, but far too often tonight it was about blown coverage. Making matters worse Burke came off looking like an ass slamming down his tablet. It his job to scheme and get the Dolphins prepared to play and two weeks in a row their defense has been flat out embarrassed. They also failed to force a turnover for the second straight week, losing 42-23 in a game Houston could have scored even more.
No matter how you slice it up the Dolphins defense has been putrid the last two game, as Deshaun Watson completed 16 of 20 passes for 239 yards and five touchdowns, this included touchdown plays of 73 yards to Will Fuller in which Bobby McClain looked he had no idea where he was and 49 yards to DeAndre Hopkins with Kiko Alonso the closest defense as the entire secondary decided to take the play off. However, the most embarrassing play came on 38-yard defensive pass interference call, setting up Houston’s final score. On the play, the Dolphins secondary committed three fouls, with Xavien Howard getting called for illegal contact, while McCain was called for holding and pass interference, while Fuller was thrown down into the end zone, in what could have also been called a personal foul. Question if Bobby McCain ate toast for breakfast would that be considered cannibalism as he was turned into toast over and over again, while Burke and Adam Gase made no efforts to make adjustments.
Offensively the Dolphins were not much better, though with Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson both sidelined its hard to blame Brock Osweiler, who struggled, on a day in which the defense played better, could have kept Miami in the game. Speaking of injuries, seven players were out Thursday making one ponder when the hell did Ray Ramirez become the Dolphins trainer. Every time you turn around someone else is going down. Especially the mysterious shoulder injury to Ryan Tannehill.
The one advantage to playing on Thursday is that Dolphins have extra time to heal before they host the Jets in Week 9. From 3-0, the Dolphins are now 4-4 in another season of NFL hell. Most teams start 3-0 make the playoffs but the Dolphins it is meaningless once again as the season is on the verge of being cuncelled. A loss to the Jets at Hard Rock Stadium and you can get the shovels out and start planning for another crappy middle round pick and another hellish year of NFL purgatory.
