A Look Back At The Sean Avery-Martin Brodeur Rivalry

I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of shit for calling this a rivalry in the title but these guys absolutely fucking hate each other and competed at a high level against each other, so I am dubbing it a rivalry. A rivalry you could definitely say Brodeur is winning due to the fact he has the Cups and the Hall of Fame. But if you ask Avery, he will tell you basically owns Brodeur.

We had Avery on Spittin’ Chiclets to talk about the beef between the two and what he would do to get into the legendary goalie’s head and like typical Sean Avery, he didn’t hold back.

After relistening to Avery talk about Brodeur I couldn’t help but find myself in a rabbit hole of videos of these two guys going at it or talking shit about each other. From twitter beefs to actually fighting on the ice, there has been some hilarious stuff. It seemed like every night from the years 2007-2009 these guys were going at it. I mean, who could forget the 2008 playoff series between the Rangers and Devils? So here is some of the stuff I found.

This video sums up a lot of the one ice stuff:

And then the two were back at it again in 2014 after Marin Brodeur was asked about Sean Avery doing dancing with the stars:

“I didn’t watch – I don’t watch those shows – but I was watching NHL Network and they mentioned it,”

“What more could he do to embarrass himself?” Brodeur said with a chuckle. (via NJ.com)

So Avery responded:

Avery also put in his new book that Brodeur was a “homewrecking dirtbag” who left his wife for her sister-in-law. Guy gives ZERO fucks and doesn’t hold back at all. It’s actually pretty funny…..calling one of the greatest goalies of all time fatso? Who does that? I’ll tell ya who, Sean Avery. Buddy is insane and it is hilarious.

Sean Avery was one of the most controversial players in NHL history but he sure did know how to move the bar. The NHL hasn’t been the same since he left and a lot of people believe the personality and flair that Avery brought to the game is what the game lacks. Not sure If I am one of those people, but I definitely think the NHL could use some more personality.
