It's Official: Jimmy G is Out for the Season

This is far from the most shocking revelation you’ll hear all day. I don’t think too many of us were watching the Niners game live and thinking Garoppolo would just rub some dirt on it and be back on the field in no time. What made Aaron Rodgers’s comeback against the Bears in Week 1 – cheating the Grim Reaper of Knee Ligaments the way he did – so special is how rare it is. The cart to the locker room is typically the bourne from which no traveler returns. …

San Francisco 49ers v Kansas City Chiefs

But there was a fool’s hope I guess that maybe he’d also pull a Discount Double Recovery and bounce back like Rodgers and salvage some of his season. Like Liz said in the immediate aftermath, seeing a non-contact injury on a routine play like that is the worst. But it’s the nature of football. And with so many lousy FieldTurf surfaces or even the notoriously shitty natural one the 49ers play their home games on (I don’t know if anyone has a beef with the field at Arrowhead and it didn’t seem to be a factor on Jimmy G’s injury), it’s a minor miracle it doesn’t happen 20 times a game.

But it happened to Garoppolo. And in a sincere way, not a Carrabis way, you hate to see it. I admitted after he threw three picks in his opening game, I couldn’t help but be happy about it. Not because I don’t like Jimmy G, because I do, but just to shut up the demagogues around New England who scream constantly about how they never should have traded him and insist Belichick wanted to make him the quarterback now but the Krafts wouldn’t let him, which is so utterly ridiculous as to be impossible. But there’s a million light years between being glad a guy threw some picks and hoping he goes to IR. I wanted Garoppolo on the field all season and to watch Brady quarterback circles around him to prove the team did the right thing. Now an argument I was really looking forward to having is a moot point until at least next year.

Oh well. It sucks but that’s the business they’ve chosen. And now a season that started with hope that San Fran would be a playoff threat is in all likelihood shot to hell. Unless CJ Beathard is the next Nick Foles. And 2018 will just be the fifth of Jimmy G’s pro career without him really getting a shot to see if he’s among the best in the league. Worst of all, it means Kiara Mia was wrong:

Though on the bright side, these two crazy kids will get to spend more time with each other. Godspeed, Jimmy G.
