My Thoughts on Henry Cavill's (Possible) Departure From Superman
(THR)The DC cinematic universe appears to be losing its Man of Steel.
Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is parting ways with Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The British actor, who first donned the blue suit for 2013’s Man of Steel,and then starred in 2016’s Batman v. Superman and last year’s Justice League, is said to be hanging up the red cape”
I think this is good for both parties involved (if true). Cavill came to DC as a wide eyed Brit that had mostly been in smaller projects outside of ‘Immortals’ and gave them what I feel was a solid performance as one of their marquee characters. ‘Man of Steel’ was rated worse than 2006’s ‘Superman Returns’ somehow, but I found Cavill’s to be grittier, darker and less of a total dork. Plus he just looks the part completely. Fuckin Yoked dawg. That body is sculpted by the gods to play a superhuman, and he’s handsome as hell to boot.
Look at those fucking lats, man. He had an insanely bad disservice in ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’, where he died in only his second movie after transitioning from farm boy to total bitch crybaby. Then came ‘Justice League’ where they gave him the infamous CGI upper lip, as well as some horrific shoehorned comedy lines.
DC is has been playing catch up to Marvel for years, pumping out sludge after sludge to fight up against their titans of cinema. To put it into perspective, ‘Ant Man & the Wasp’, a standalone sequel about one of marvels lower-tier heroes, is close to surpassing ‘Justice Leagues’ total gross. That’s to say nothing about their difference in critical reception either, with ‘Ant Man & The Wasp’ sitting at 88% on RT looking down on ‘Justice League’ at 40%.
Point is, DC needs a reboot in the worst way. You can see the tonal shift from dark and dreary in the trailers for ‘Shazam!’ which looks way more jovial. If that means scrapping Cavill, I don’t mind. I’d rather he move on to better projects anyway, because god damn, did I love him in ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’. Make more movies where he has a damn mustache!
He might be legitimately the sexiest dude on earth with that lip dressing. As a note, Cavill has sort of spoken out about the issue. He posted this instagram tonight.
I honestly have no idea what that is supposed to mean. His agent also posted this:
Anything is possible at this point. I’d like to see him walk, though. My king deserves better.
