DC's Troubles Continue As Henry Cavill Is Officially Out As Superman

THR- The DC cinematic universe appears to be losing its Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is parting ways with Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Though neither side is confirming, the British actor, who first donned the blue suit for 2013’s Man of Steel, and then starred in 2016’s Batman v. Superman and last year’s Justice League, is said to be hanging up the red cape.

Warners had been trying to enlist Cavill, who most recently co-starred in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, for a Superman cameo in Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi and will bow April 5. But contract talks between Cavill’s WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.

Ohhh DC. DC, DC, DC. What’re you doing? Why are you even holding on at this point?

Let me get something clear. I love the DCEU. Genuinely. Trash my taste all you want, but I unironically enjoy the shit out of ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, ‘Suicide Squad’ (well, 2/3 of that one), ‘Wonder Woman’, and ‘Justice League’. A lot of that has to do with how much I adore the characters they’re about – growing up, reading comic books and watching cartoons about these heroes and then seeing them taken seriously on the big screen is always a treat.

Now, I can also admit that aside from ‘Wonder Woman’, all of those movies are discombobulated messes with moments ranging from “good” to “great” to “horrendous” and “unwatchable”. I can admit that the shared universe they’ve put together with those films is a complete and total failure, objectively, and is embarrassing to watch as a huge DC fanboy. I can admit that DC trying so desperately to catch up to what Marvel has built over the course of the last decade is what doomed them from the start, and that this iteration of the universe isn’t even comparable to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would be insulting to suggest it’s even an eighth as great in quality.

There are all things most DC fanboys can’t admit for some reason. They’re the most delusional fanbase on the internet, truly. They try to tank every Marvel film’s Rotten Tomatoes score because they have a theory that the only reason DC’s shitty movies are busts at the box office is because of the bad reviews they get, and they have a theory that they only get those bad reviews because Disney pays critics to leave them. It’s fucking psychotic.

Now, Henry Cavill, the face of this universe who EVERYTHING has been built around – DC’s equivalent to Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man – is done playing the role of Superman/Clark Kent, just months after news surfaced that Ben Affleck would seemingly be done playing Batman for the studio, annnnnnnnnnd this is those fanboys right now:

I liked Henry Cavill a lot in this role, honestly. I didn’t particularly love the material he was given (especially in ‘BvS: Dawn of Justice’), but I thought he definitely had everything it took to be a great Clark Kent/Superman. He was clearly super passionate about the role as well, which means a lot to comic book fans as we’re still kinda on the defense about being called looked down upon and called nerds, so we don’t want folks that don’t love these heroes making any cash off them. Sometimes, that’s thrown to the side, however, like we saw with Ruby Rose after she was casted as Batwoman in the CW superhero universe, a role she was ULTRA passionate about, and “fans” bullied her off the internet, but I digress.

This should be the final nail in the coffin for the DCEU. Good job, good effort, thanks for the entertainment, but please just put this thing out of its misery now. Keep Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, keep her movies canon, and build everything around her. Change everything else up, MAAAAAAAYBE hold on to Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Zachary Levi as Shazam depending on how their flicks do, but it’s time to just start over. Some folks have suggested a Flashpoint-style reboot to do so, which I’d rather they not do (if you don’t know what ‘Flashpoint’ means, it’s a pretty iconic comic arc) because I just don’t trust the people in charge to handle it correctly.

My suggestion for the next Superman? Well,,,
