Bold Strategy By The Sixers To Seemingly Not Have A Plan For The GM Spot
[ESPN] - Since the dismissal of Bryan Colangelo in June, coach Brett Brown has served as the franchise’s interim GM surrounded with front-office executives Ned Cohen, Marc Eversley and Elton Brand. The Sixers are promoting those three executives on Monday into expanded roles and new titles, league sources said.
Philadelphia 76ers managing partner Josh Harris told ESPN that the franchise’s general manager search is identifying new targets to meet and interview, but didn’t rule out leaving the interim structure in place for the coming season.
Uh, what exactly are the Sixers doing here? This is quickly turning into a bit of a disaster despite all the positive comments made by Josh Harris and Brett Brown. The fact is, you have this team that’s getting ready to take the step to compete to make the NBA Finals and can’t figure out the GM situation.
If Brett Brown is the one in the interim role this season, it’s only going to lead to problems down the road. You have a coach who wants to bring in his guys and his system. That’s going to be the dominant case here in terms of who he signs, re-signs, trades, etc. What if the GM envisions something different? There’s no communication between the two of them considering Brown is making this essentially on his own.
There needs to be a decision made, especially since Brown doesn’t want to do this long term. Figure out who you’re going to hire, promote, etc. Start working it out and let Brown focus on only coaching. This is a year where the Sixers could make the NBA Finals, especially with how open the East is this year. There’s a chance this could impact the Sixers during the season, especially around the trade deadline.
If only there was a GM that knows the organization and helped build the team as we know it, but should probably find a new slant.
