The University Of Maryland Football Team Announces How They Will Honor Their Fallen Teammate, Jordan McNair

Members of the University Of Maryland football team spoke out yesterday on how they plan to honor and remember their fallen brother and teammate, Jordan McNair, the rest of this season and in the seasons to follow. McNair died on June 13th after he collapsed during a practice in May.

They announced that for every game this season they will be wearing a helmet sticker with the #79 on the back of their helmet for Jordan McNair. It was also announced that no Maryland football player will wear his number 79 again until after 2021, the year Jordan would have graduated. He will also be introduced and honored on Senior Day with the rest of his class. There will be a moment of silence before the Terps’ first two games against the University Of Texas and Temple. A scholarship in McNair’s name will be given out to one student-athlete from the football team every year as well. McNair’s locker will be encased in plexiglass and preserved in it’s current state and will be moved to Cole Field House when they make the permanent move there from the Gossett Team House. The Offensive Lineman room in the newly renovated Cole Field House will be named after McNair as well.

These are all great signs of respect and great tributes for a kid that should be getting ready to start another semester at school. An insanely sad time for his family, friends, and teammates. It will be interesting to see how this plays out with the coaching staff at Maryland, even after their apology last week that seemed to come about 2 months too late. They parted ways with their strength and conditioning coach, and head coach, DJ Durkin is still on paid administrative leave.

I’m not 100% sure, but my guess is this was a team led operation where they found ways to honor their fallen brother, and I think under the circumstances, they picked some good ways to remember him.
