Cincinnati Sports Columnist Blasts People Digging Up Old Tweets By Using His Racist Past

You know, I just can’t understand why the newspaper business is dying. Perhaps it could be due to the inability to change to meet the instant demand of the Internet. Perhaps it’s the fact the writing is typically outdated guys who feel a sense of entitlement. Or, perhaps, it’s because of morons like Paul Daugherty of the Cincinnati Enquirer, who wrote the dumbest article I’ve ever read – and that’s saying a lot.

The premise of the article is how we should stop judging people for tweets from the past. It obviously focuses on guys like Josh Hader, Sean Newcomb and Trea Turner. If that’s just the story, fine, whatever. People can have their own thought process and no one has ever called Daugherty a great columnist. However, he uses his own story because he wants to feel like some sort of martyr or that he needs forgiveness. Here’s his story:

In the winter of 1974, when I was 17, I told Ronnie Scott to sit in the back of the bus. Actually, we all told him that.

On the school bus, on the way to a high school wrestling match, we waited for Ronnie to climb the bus steps, then chanted, “back of the bus, back of the bus.” And we all liked Ronnie Scott.

Ronnie was African-American. He was the only African-American on the wrestling team at Winston Churchill High, a public school in suburban Washington, D.C., that owned more than its share of white privilege. Churchill was the sort of place where the students drove nicer cars than the teachers.

Hey, uh, Paul. I’d argue that’s worse than any tweet that those three guys had out there. In fact I’d argue opposite of you, you goddamn moron. He claims that since it’s 1974 it wasn’t nearly as bad or the fact it happened in a rich white town. Yeah, because, racial tension wasn’t high back then at all. Nope, chanting back at the bus to one of the few black people in your town is a completely normal thing to do.

Again, I just can’t comprehend why the newspaper business is dying. I used to feel sad about it because I went to school to write for a newspaper. I learned how to read by reading the standing and stats in the sports page. Now, I don’t give a shit and it’s because of people like Paul Daugherty. This isn’t his first garbage article but it’s the first one that really exemplified that he’s pretty much just shows he’s also a garbage person.

Yes, digging up old tweets is a somewhat weird thing to do, but it’s the world we live in. There’s also something to be said about being a high school senior or older and doing things like this. But, maybe take a step back and don’t blame the people digging up the old tweets and blame the people making the racist/xenophobic/homophobic remarks. And if you’re the person who chanted back of the bus to a black guy, definitely don’t write a column blasting the people digging up past tweets.
