Two-Weight UFC Champ Daniel Cormier Ethered Alexander Gustafsson On Instagram Last Night Over A Call Out

God DAMN! Gus said “Heyo DC you wanna fight?” and DC just ended his life with some cold hard facts. If it was tl;dr for you, here’s a much shorter way to get across what UFC Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight Champion did to Gustafsson here:

I’ve been a pretty big fan of Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson for a long time, but every single thing Cormier said in this post is entirely factual (assuming Gus actually did turn down Jan Blachowicz and Khalil Rountree Jr). There’s been a Luke Rockhold-esque sense of entitlement that flooded his character following his razor-thin decision loss to Cormier back at UFC 192 back in October of 2015, and it hasn’t made a ton of sense. I mean, truthfully, I thought he should’ve received the Light Heavyweight Championship opportunity that Volkan Oezdemir (his originally scheduled UFC 227 opponent) was granted at UFC 220, following the Mauler’s brutal uppercut destruction of Glover Teixeira, but the UFC is a business disguised as a sports promotion. Always has been, always will be. Like Cormier has now said time and time again, him and Gustafsson didn’t draw for shit in their main event slot years back, so the UFC tried something else.

Following that previously mentioned win over Teixeira, Gus takes a bunch of time off waiting around for a title shot, finally calls somebody out months later, but it was Luke Rockhold ONE DAY after he got knocked out (and I mean SERIOUSLY knocked into fucking bolivian), turns down two fights following Volkan Oezdemir’s drop off from the UFC 227 card, and pulls himself from the card with a “minor injury” as soon as he gets called out. Gus, I love ya – or maybe loved ya at this point, emphasis on the tense – but you ain’t a draw. You can’t call the shots like you’re attempting to here. Go to Bellator if that’s what you want.

Cormier’s on top of the world right now and very much in a position to decide his own fate and future in the octagon – particularly because he’s only got one or two fights left until retirement, and he just set up a superfight with Brock Lesnar – so while this post wasn’t completely necessary coming from him (he really didn’t have to address Gus, he could’ve continued to passive-aggressively ignore him), it was SO cocky, deserved, and fantastic anyway.
