The NBA Is Here To Save Us From Awful Football With Multiple Electric Buzzer Beaters
Rich Storry. Getty Images.Apparently, there was rather disgusting football game happening on Monday Night Football, but if I'm being honest I'm just going off what my timeline was telling me. Sounds like a real suckfest, which is becoming all too common in the NFL if you ask me. Great ratings because football is king and the NFL has us all by the balls, but very often do we find ourselves watching an unwatchable product.
Thankfully, it's basketball season which means the NBA is here to save the day. The beauty of the NBA is every single night, you're getting something awesome. Don't let the haters and losers of which there are still many confuse you. Ball Nights deliver.
Take Monday night for example. Who doesn't love buzzer beaters? It may be a random Monday in early November on the NBA schedule, but whatever. Sick ass plays are sick ass plays.
We begin in Orlando, where the Magic and Blazers had one of the most insane final 30 seconds you'll ever see on a basketball court. The Blazers going on a late run to take a 2 point lead with 12 seconds left. A great response by Paolo Banchero to finish through contact and tie things at 112, only to then miss the ensuing FTA. Not to worry, he immediately stole the ball back from Jrue Holiday on the next possession, which then set up this play
That's a tough ass shot. First career game winner for Desmond Bane, and that exact shot/moment is why they paid that hefty price to bring him in from the Grizzlies. Now granted, if Paolo just makes his FTs you don't need this shot, but don't let that detail get in the way of a great game winner to cap off what was truly an insane ending. The Magic avoid the disaster of losing both games at home in a B2B after dropping their last game against the Celts on Sunday night.
If that wasn't enough, almost immediately after this game winner we had another great buzzer beater on our hands, this time coming via the Pistons and the Wizards. By all accounts, it looked like the Wizards were going to pull off the MASSIVE upset. Don't get it twisted, these are not the Pistons like you may remember them. They're 8-2, had won 6 straight, and sit atop the Eastern Conference. Losing to the Wizards would be a disaster. With 1.9 seconds left, it certainly looked like that was on the horizon, until….
Not quite the same degree of difficulty as the Bane game winner, but still a massive shot in a huge spot with the game on the line at the buzzer, so by my calculations, I feel pretty comfortable in saying that moment ruled. Nothing like being on your last breath to suddenly staying alive with a big time make in front of your own crowd. That's the good shit.
The Pistons went on to win that game in OT, so I'd say that was a pretty important shot.
Oh, what. You thought we were done? HA! You fool. I'll take both of those shots and raise you an even more insane buzzer beating finish. That's right. We had not one, not two, not three, but FOUR insane buzzer beaters Monday night. Wait, four?
Yes. Four.
In Cavs/Heat, the Cavs were scrambling after Sam Merrill had missed a corner 3 in an attempt to tie the game in the final seconds. Somehow, by the grace of God, the ball found Donovan Mitchell with just enough time left on the clock for his to gather himself, get behind the line, and bury a gigantic prayer
Overtime right? One problem. There was 0.4 left on the clock. Plenty of time to get a shot off if you're the Heat since you had a timeout and could advance the ball. If you get a good look, you have a chance. So what did Spo do? He got his team a fantastic look
A+++++++++ inbounds play. I remember Doc Rivers doing something like that way back when with KG. With that little time left, just a work of art to get Wiggins going to the rim like that. He got it off with ease and the Heat survived in unreal fashion.
How many times have you ever seen two shots like that back to back? All in the span of like 2 seconds? Unreal stuff.
That's the beauty of the NBA. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have never heard the name Daniss Jenkins once in their lives. In this sport, it doesn't matter who you are. Just like Jordan Walsh hitting that dagger against the Magic last night. Everyone in the NBA is awesome, and on any given night at any given moment, any one of them can give you an electric buzzer beater. And the best part? Shit like this happens all the time.
We all know football is king and that's just how it will be for the rest of time. But on a night to night basis? Basketball is a much more consistent product.
